Ely NV to Arches NP

Great_basinIt was a long day, but not longer than yesterday.  Eighty mile mistakes are no fun.  Today we employed both GPS’s and had written notes besides.  The View has a huge windshield with a significant shaded section at the top .  I’ve found myself asking Louise at critical junctures “Which way do we go?” when one GPS says drive through the economically depressed section of town, and the other thinks that we should continue on into the sunset with the butterflies. Yosemite to Ely, NV

monoThe day finally ended.  I usually don’t think that way, but today was far longer than I anticipated, mostly because I used only one GPS and followed the main road, even though the map indicated the main road made no turns.  Wrong! I thought that the main road was easy to follow, it wasn’t.  Sometimes you shouldn’t go with the flow, you should pay attention. Continue reading

Yosemite, Day 3

yosemiteIt was an easy day to sleep in, we’ve become accustomed to west coast time, as much as we’ve tried to stay on Mountain time.  With the heater running, and it being cozy in the loft and the long hike yesterday, we lazed, to the point that by the time I was ready to make breakfast, it was a rush to get the coffee perked and the pancakes made before the no generator limit of 9 AM.  I never want to be that guy. North Rim of the Grand Canon, Cape Royal

I woke up tired this morning, which is never a good thing.  I’m not sure if it was the five mile hike at altitude, or the altitude, or staying up late with excellent companions, or being too cold and not being smart enough to realize it during the night, or all of the preceding, but I was tired.  The hot showers were excellent but I didn’t wake up like I anticipated.  I was really glad that we had filled up with water yesterday afternoon. Off to the Grand Canyon from Zion

We eventually arose this morning.  It was hot the last several days and we dip plenty of hiking in the heat.  We had fun.  Yesterday was definitely an improvement over the day before in Zion.  Fewer people made for a much better experience.  Breakfast was good.  I opted for cereal while Bob & Louise had the waffles.  I ate a blueberry thing and part of an English muffin.  Something in one or two of the latter gave me an allergic reaction.  All was OK, but the rest of the morning I was really dry.  Was it the absolute lack of humidity or the baked good? We will never know. Continue reading
