This day was a travel day from Moab, UT to Cuba, NM. The scenery along the route has been both spectacular and minimalistic.
The previous two days were long; one filled with travel from cool Bryce National Park to the Moab, UT area and the other was an intense visit to Arches National Park and Canyon and National Park. The temperature in Moab was in the mid 90’s when we arrived late in the day but cooled off the first evening.
We had very loose plans. I’ve been to Moab twice before, one with the RV, and I was aware of some areas that had dry camping. One concern was the ability to run the generator to cool off the RV until the evening became cool enough to open everything and let God supply the air conditioning. We became aware of a new Utah State Park just north of Moab. It was brand new, and we figured that it was convenient, it wasn’t too close to sunset yet, and we were tired. The new Utah State Park, Utahraptor State Park. (Yes, one word) opened in May. The rate for electricity was $50. We had plenty of water and two differently fueled generators, so we opted for the primitive spot $15.
We arrived at our site at Fossil Flats and found the nearest camper was about 500 feet away. After being at the site for several hours I finally noticed that he was also running a generator. We ran the generator until 10PM, when it finally cooled off (Generator hours ended at 10 PM; we were good, so I turned it off). We had a fire; I had a cigar. It was a very nice night.
The following day we toured the two national parks. Canyonlands and Arches. We were fortunate to obtain a timed entry pass to Arches. I was surprised as we had not needed ones at Yosemite, Yellowstone or Bryce Canyon. That evening we stayed at a primitive campground on the Colorado River. It was a very beautiful campsite that was only $10. I was feeling poorly because of the heat and difficulty in hydrating, so we stopped at a market and picked up the makings for a quick dinner.

Today has been an adventure in roads. They seem to be working on every road we chose to travel on today. We’ve passed through the four corners section of the US and drove right past the Four Corners Tourist Center. (Been there – expensive and a dump). Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico have been on the route. Full hookups tonight, so it should be positively civilized.
